Experienced an excellent night full of rockabilly fun and atmosphere at the Westernport Hotel, San Remo last night 7th Jan. Together with locals and holidaymakers, the pub was packed with punters from the nearby Kustom Nationals on Philip Island.
‘Itchy Fingers’ and ‘Atomic Hi-Tones’ were the main source of entertainment for the night. Rock & Roll newbies learning to dance was also good to see, plus full on bogan dancing was funny as, especially when the grappa took hold.
As the house P.A. had blown a few days earlier, Cliff set up AHT’s P.A. sound system for the night. The ever-reliable mixing of Maryann Jolly created crisp and clear vocals with a kick ass bottom end. She had the bluesy-rock of Itchy Fingers, together with the gutsy rockabilly of the Atomics sounding great. They were well behaved but at one stage, I thought the natives were gunna go on the warpath.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, there was a surprise appearance of rockabilly supremo … Rusty Pinto from Perth. AHT’s Cliff Jolly had no hesitation of inviting him up on stage with the Atomics. Rusty promptly accepted and delighted the crowd with a cuppla tunes. A nice gesture indeed.
A slight negative of the night was the blown stage lights (may have blown with the house mixing desk). We could hardly make out the musos and it must have been difficult to shoot vids of the night. But I saw our very own Jitterbug take some vids. Hopefully they turned out ok and he posts them on this thread ???
A top night indeed and I thank all the musos for the entertainment. Good stuff.
