Hi All,
Greg here from Elmore in North Central Victoria. We're a small community with big facilities, lots of energy and a desire to establish a Rock N Roll event in our town. The onus has fallen on me to approach you, the serious Rockers, to discover what makes a Rock N Roll event a success.
We love the idea of a competition. Is that popular? How broad a range of music do Rockers like? Does a hotrod Show and Shine add to the mood? Who has the Hottest Rods? Could classes be run before the evening event?
I'd love to see the Highway closed to through traffic and the streets lined with Hotrods and dance classes are under way before we move to the evening event.
We really need your guidance in this first instance, just to give some direction and contacts. I'll be grateful for any and all offerings and ideas about anything from the dance floor requirements to the catering offered. I'm as interested in what generates a great mood as I am in what facilities a band needs.
I hope you'll make contact so that we might add a new Rock N Roll event to your calendar.
Cheers,
Greg Murray convention2020@westnet.com.au
I don't think you can go wrong if you adopt the same operating model used by Wintersun and the Geelong & Ararat R&R festivals etc. These festivals have been very successful for many years combining hotrods, Elvis & other popular R&R pioneers themes, dance competitions & classes and with a mixture of rockabilly & 1950's R&R bands.
Also, it helps with good advertising & publicity for your festival and the availability of adequate accommodation facilities & other attractions that Elmore & the surrounds offer. As in real estate advertising jargon - location, location, location; perhaps timing, timing, timing is all important in determining how successful the Elmore R&R festival will eventually turn out to be.
Yeah, Jitterbug .A good point using the wintersun model. But, I would go further and adopt The Bunnings model. The Bunnings model also goes for location, location, etc. But the main drawcard is the sausage stand out the front. The place is always packed with people .Of course there are a variety of tools there too .But, you get that where ever there is a crowd.... .Good luck Greg .Happy to help out.
Just to add..The people you should be asking for ideas are the people that have done it .(and done it well) The godfathers of rockabilly and major events. Cliff ,Maryann or Jazz. These people will give you the shirts off their backs and all the ideas you can handle.Just ask.
I am sure Greg appreciates all genuine advice or input you can offer him to get the Elmore R&R festival going. Let's support R&R festivals in our communities.
Thank you for your advice and supportive thoughts and ideas. I'm going to try and track down a first rate mobile dance floor as I know you guys and girls do some serious slippin' and sliding, not to mention have some expensive threads and footwear. If someone can suggest the square metreage of the Mini-WinterSun floor, that would be a big help. I'll definitely be at Mildura, but by then I'd like to have a pretty clear lay of the land since we're keen on a mid November event. Please email straight away if that time conflicts with another 'dance'. We want to compliment, not conflict with, your Rock& Roll calendar.
Again, thanks for your thoughts to date. Anything you're good enough to forward to me, no matter how incidental it might seem to you, will be gladly received.
Cheers,
Greg
Greg - for what it's worth in terms of your festival planning, I believe the Tallangatta Fifties (R&R) festival is on again this year on 24th and 25th of October .........
Thanks for the heads-up about Tallangatta. Another one I'll get along to. Lyn tells me that my mid-November timeline isn't without conflict. In fact it seems to be a time you guys have plenty on event wise. Is there a time of year when the weather's reasonable, that you suggest I look toward?
Don't hesitate to include your thoughts on all the special things that each gig offers. It's often the detail that differentiates the good from the great times.
Cheers,
Greg
Greg, November sees the hotrodders heading up to Bright for the biggest run on the Victorian hotrod calendar. Our bands go up there as do many dancers. It's the 6th, 7th and 8th of November. If you check out Cruisin magazine or Let's go cruising website: http://www.letsgocruisin.com.au/ you can get a feel for what's on around Australia and search by state and month.
Grateful Greg here in Elmore. Firstly, I need to thank all those who've taken time to help me begin to climb the very steep learning curve I face to put on our event. Geoff, Rob, Longgonebaby, Icon, Dee, Robert, Joyce, Rocknray, Jitterbug, Jukeboxrocker2007, Lynn, Maryann, thanks a million for your contributions. I trust you'll all send followups when ever anything comes to mind. You guys and girls probably don't know just how much you actually know!
I have, in the back of my mind, this voice telling me that as time goes on and the major infrastructure is in place, the liitle things need to be deveoped which will make Elmore's event special. I think of the parties I've been to over the years which had that great X factor and live long in the memory because organisers went that extra mile.
If you'll all indulge another moment, would you respond to the following: 1)What's your favourite band?; 2) What's your favourite Event?; 3) When is there a gap in your event calendar?
Thanks again. Keep the feedback coming.
Best regards, Greg

my email address is littlemaria@optusnet.com.au
Go Greg and.... Keep On Rocking....warm hugs Maria
Hi Maria,
Thank you for your warm email. I've seen your name on the 'pages'.
I've just said to Rocknray that I don't dance, but that's all going to
change ASAP.
Maria, we have a huge, ex-cinema here with a stage and a perfect hardwood
floor. Is that type of floor OK for dancing?
Also, my plans for this year seem forelorn. There's no time to get a well
produced event ready before Christmas. Certainly not one that doesn't
conflict with one of your important, established gigs, so I'm wanting to
work towards the end of April. A couple of people have said that's a good
time. I'd appreciate your opinion, Maria (and friends).
Thanks again for the contact. I think I'm getting the R&R bug!
Best regards,
Greg

As someone else mentioned timing. Check the Calendar Dates for 2009 in the rear section of the latest "Rock & Roll News". You could give the editor Jenny a ring (03) 9725 5380. Check out the gig guide on this web site as well. It's good to know what you're up against.
If you think I can help more, give me a call 0413 393 345 or email louis_mingaars@msn.com Hope to catch up at Mildura or Barham both are on our list of to dos.
