Once again Kathy and myself have come to Melbourne, the Australian HQ for rockabilly and rock and roll. We always try to work our visit in with AHT gigs so we were very pleased to see they were doing the Monash Saturday night and the Mitcham RSL Sunday night, but what topped it off was the Rockin’ Daddy’s at Little Maria’s on Friday night, fantastic. We haven’t seen the lovely Maria for about 12 months so it was a bonus to be able to go to one of her dances. Top music, top crowd, top night and we managed to win one of the door prizes. Also good to catch up with Paul again as well as Terry, Rob and Con and we were introduced to many others, thanks Maria, we’ll do it again sometime.
Saturday night of course was the best because rockabilly is what we came over for. AHT was firing and this is the first time we’ve seen them since Don has joined, he certainly is a great asset. The sound was excellent and the crowd was a rockin’. We caught up with Jazza and Terry and were introduced around to the rest of the gang. Our good Vegas friends, Gav and Judi also came along for a top night.
Sunday arvo, where else but “church”? Cold Snap were playing there for the first time, fairly cruizey blues band, bit slow at first but they are blues and this didn’t stop people from dancing. Later they moved the beat up a bit and the place was jumping. These guys and gal have got a great sound. Met some more people including Neil and Greg with Paul, Jazza and Terry making sure we felt at home.
Gluttons for punishment on we went to the Mitcham RSL to finish the weekend off. Nice small crowd and a good dance floor. Goes without saying we enjoyed the music. Thanks to all the band, Cliff, Artie, Kevin and Don and not forgetting the sound technician, Maryann who weaves it all together.
And an extra thanks to Cliff and Maryann for being such wonderful hosts.
Looking forward to doing it all again soon.
Any VicRockers travelling over this way be sure to call into The Mustang Bar for all your music and dance needs. Friday night swing, Saturday night rockabilly, Sunday night rock and roll/rockabilly, Monday night rockabilly and Tuesday night latin.
Regards to all, Ando and Kathy.
