    Can you help this lady?

Yesterday I received this request from a lady. I am capable of quite a bit that's Internet related but unfortunately I'm not able to help her with this so I'm posting her question here in case someone else can.
"Hi, im just wanting to make an enquiry, we used to go to dances at the St. Kilda town hall which was awesome, i think it was held once a month. Im wondering if that could be started up again, there were a few bands playing on the night and everyone used to come with their cars and families. Now that i have young children i would love to go again. Just wondering if it can start up again."
If anyone can help please let me know.

Re: Can you help this lady?

I attended a few dances in the ball room at the St Kilda town Hall and if memory serves correct, they were held by the Elvis Presley Fan Club. The dances were grand in scale with an old school theme and 600 to 800 punters. In the 1990s a fire badly damaged this building but was quickly restored with a remodelled auditorium. I don’t mean to sound negative but I doubt a rock & rock club would take the risk of restoring those dances in our present economic climate. Alternatively, there are other hall type dances around Melbourne (VicRock gig guide) for you to introduce rock & roll to your kids and good on you for doing so. Hope this helps a bit.
Live & let Live, Love & let Love, Rock & let Roll, plus related clichés.

Re: Can you help this lady?

The St.Kilda Town Hall monthly dances were the major Rock and Roll event from the late Seventies right through to when the place was gutted by fire.

It was then shifted to the Melbourne Town Hall for a while until it ended up at the Moorabbin Town Hall.

St. Kilda Town Hall had the perfect setting with it's long circular driveway for Classic Car parking.........It had a centre stage with the Allstars including International and Interstate guest artists on one side of the hall and a popular local band on the other......when one band stopped playing, everyone would move around behind the stage to the other side of the hall to catch the other band.......you could purchase all sorts of Fifties style beverages, clothing and memorabila.

Derek Gray and Ian B Allen ran the gig and I believe between 1000 and 1500 people attended regularly making it without doubt the best Rock and Roll venue around in those days.

You are correct Jazza, if only local councils were more community spirited with their real estate. Although I suspect a lot of our Community Halls are now owned by Private Enterprise and as such have become cost prohibitive.

Cheers and yes, enjoy the venues as suggested on this site and you can't go wrong.
