Hi redback, i didn't know that there are any rules concerning posts except that we cant advertise the same gig more than once in 7 days.
As a regular user of Vicrock there have been many venues and many other members that have posted gigs weeks and months in advance.
Maybe Mel can give us some sort of guidelines on the rules or maybe even make a rule that we only advertise the upcoming weekly gigs only.
Im happy to go with that. What do you think Mel?
ginger i would point you to the "forum rules' in particular
Avoid frivolous or nonsense posts
A frivolous post is one which says little more than "I agree," "Me too," or "Wow!" or a reply when one is not required. While this should not deter users from making a contribution that they consider meaningful, posts that make no perceptible contribution to a discussion should be avoided. Repeat offenders will have their posts deleted.
you are correct in that there are no rules about posting early for an event. perhaps the moderators can come up with something to cover this.
gaylene much appreciate the info. i am just making a few comments here i dont have a gig to promote but was watching the site and noticed stuff. happy to admit when i am wrong. such as posting far out gigs.
bolto 74 check the rules of the forum, this is one of several
Be respectful of others at all times
Occasionally, there will be conflicts that arise when people voice opinions. Be courteous when disagreeing with others. It is possible to disagree without being insulting
I like early posts, it allows me to forward plan dances I am thinking of going to. Its real simple to time manage if you use your computor calendar, I've got quite a few dances flaged, right up to Nov 09. I am currently trying to organise tickets for dances late Feb & Mid March, early booking generally secures some tickets. I now know where I'll be on the 4th of April.
Good stuff Snappy we lov ya.
i think its great to be able to look up whats coming ahead,it gives people time to work out what they are going to do or what gig they want,im always looking ahead at the gig calender,.so i think it should be left as is.its peoples choices.
Re: Gig ads in advance.
Personally, I like the idea of advertising gigs in advance, especially the more major ones. The Meltdown & Rampage days at the FTG Hotel are Mega events that run for 10 hours.
Interstate punters need to plan for these weekends well in advance. Even local punters like single parents, need to plan for baby-sitters etc. So I disagree with Redback on this point for the reasons given.
Re: Frivolous or nonsense posts.
These posts can be annoying at times but are not as common as a few years ago. In my opinion (and it’s not about anyone in particular) … if a member constantly uses ‘few-word’ posts, they just demean themselves and advertise the fact that they lack imagination. I cannot understand why some members bother to log on with two-word posts. It’s a total waste of time. Anyway … no big deal.
Re: Forum posting.
The way I see it … Redback simply asked two questions and provoked a response. I would have preferred a reason behind his/her questions. Nevertheless … all within the guidelines that Mel has set out. The positives were that most of the responses were interesting reading with a minute insight into how some people think. The downside is that this member was unfairly judged for their comment.
Sorry Shane, but we can’t afford to discourage people from having an opinion. No matter how much we disapprove. Otherwise, more VicRock members will board the “Can’t be bothered posting anymore” train. There’s a big difference between stirring and expressing an opinion in a courteous way.
Re: Stirrers
Stirrers are easily spotted. The smarter ones try to camouflage their posts but eventually, they are always highlighted by their insecurities and paranoia. Also, very few members on this site use their real name as their handle. This doesn’t mean they are out to cause havoc. It’s the ones who constantly change their name. Those first time posters who seem to know their way around the VicRock site and know how to use its intricate facilities. These are the members that have a hidden agenda and need to be exposed. Not people like Redback.
My opinion only.

I personally am guilty of advertising as much as 4 or 5 months in advance in some instances. Especially to interstate people. It is surprising how many people are willing to travel some distance for gigs especially if they get cheap air.
If they know well ahead, they can watch for air sales. People ask us to let them know what is happening. I imagine other bands get asked as well.
Bands get booked 12 months or more in advance for some gigs, particularly major events so advance information can also be helpful for booking accommodation. Some places get very heavily booked when major events are on. eg Kurri Kurri, Bright, Narooma. Booking early gets you close to the action.
A few years back, there were full page ads in Rock and Roll News and flyers circulating as early as August for New Years Eve dances round town.
We have every issue of Rock and Roll News for the last 8 years so it is easy to look up what was going on and patterns in advertising.
ON/OFF Topic
It was not that long ago that many of the people who now use vicrock never knew of it.
Mel started it around 7-8 years ago. People like Danny from Flashback, Lyndon from Shadoogie, RobE (Moderater), Jitterbug (more recently a moderator), Alan Walker (Waltzing Matilda entertainment manager) were among the first users I noticed. Where is Bruce these days and Malibu.
Mel was initially a friend of friends and through them he contacted us inviting Cliff to have a promo page for the Rockin Daddys. I used to talk to Mel every Sunday night and he used to say we should start using his site to advertise gigs. Eventually we did.
I'd say there was about 3-4 years of gentle vicrock use and then it snowballed and took off like a rocket, with now the site being a major player in the promotion of entertainment in the Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly and Hot Rod scenes used by punters, bands, promotors and venues daily.
I would hate to have to put a price on the value of the collective amount of advertising that has been done on this site for absolutely no remuneration to Mel.
Next time you see him and gig hound, shout them a drink.
Promotors note: YOU CAN HIRE SPACE ON VICROCK for prominant advertising.
Also, for a fee you can have your event advertised to the many vicrock members via the vicrock email Newsletter.
Also, vicrock offers a website design service.
I totaly agree with you Janice.
Maybe we need another forum rule for long, boring and meaningless posts that dont seem to go anywhere.
No more essay posts please Jazza & Figgy, keep it short and sweet and get to the point.
I don't think it does any harm wether you post small or large comments,
If you take an interest in the particular forum & want to read it, then fine!
But, if your not interested or you don't know the person whom the birthday "etc" may be related to,
then don't read it, simple as that!
We all have the choice to turn our computor to another tropic... OR OFF...
As far as Figjam is concern she has always put up a bloody good post/pictures about every
trip & occasion that they have been involved in,
I for one think its great.
By the Way....I don't read any one complaining about the type of
lipstick BlingBling is wearing.
Posting gigs which are a bit down the track is a good thing for all,
Many times I have seen people ask here what is on
because they are heading to Melbourne.
All in all this is a great site thanks to Mel.
Some are just to sensitive or "what-ever" ... ''beats me''....
It is fun and that is what it should be.
Well said Gaylene. Your post was not too long and not too short. It even catered for those that are challenged with short-attention-span. You made a few points, and they were backed up with reasons.
Your response on this topic was a good learning example for those new (3 - 5 post) members. I most admired your suggestion when someone does not approve … eg, turn off. An option some forget they have.
I think this is an interesting topic (over 500 views) and I’m sure some VicRock members have learnt from it (no matter how small) and that’s a positive.
Yes Gaylene … more fun needed.
