    Smile Dance Competition

The Victorian Rock & Roll Dance championship is coming up on 9th and 10th of May. Should be a great event which will be held at the Heritage Bar & Grill Receptions located on High Street in Epping. I understand Shadoogie is playing live music for some of the competition events as well as the social dancing on the 10th May.

On the subject of dance competition, do you fancy winning a Bronze medal, a silver perhaps or even Gold! The 12th Australian Masters Games scheduled for 20th Feb - 1st March 2009 are coming back to Melbourne as the host city. The Games will be held in Geelong and Dance competition is one of the many on offer. Having participated in past Games, I would recommend it to all Rock & Roll and Swing dancers. I hope the format again allows one to dance at the "social" levels as well as the normal competitive levels - Advanced, Intermediate and Beginners.

The emphasis is on participation & having fun first. Winning a medal is just an icing on the cake ...........Also, you just may get to compete against overseas competitors and later making friends with them.

So start looking out for that "perfect" dance partner, and practice, practice, practice ...... I will be doing same!

    Re: Dance Competition

Having been involved in the World Masters Games in Melbourne in 2002, I can highly recommend getting invloved in these events. Each sport has various levels from very competitive to just out to have fun levels, and a great party atmosphere. The web site doesn't yet have any details on the dance section. Does anyone have any details?

    Re: Dance Competition

Joceb -I understand past dance competitions in the Australian Masters Games have been organised under the auspices of Denis Blackburn's Australian Rock & Roll Dancesport Inc (ARRD) which in turn hands over day to day running of the events to the respective state Rock & Roll organisation. A person by the name of Dennis Foley has been listed as the Victorian's ARRD contact. I am not sure if Dennis is still involved with VRRDA. Maybe RobE as VRRDA's secretary can comment on this in due course.

The registration starts end of June and closes December 2008. I will post more info as it comes to hand.

For those interested, you can go to the Adelaide's 2007 Australian Masters Games web site for results and pictures for the last dance competition.

    Talking Re: Dance Competition

    Love that video, GAG!

Wonderful dancer ..... I'll give him a Gold medal for the "Boogie Woogie" event ...... but others might fault him for dancing without a partner!

Hey GAG -hope you too are on the look out for that "perfect" dance partner, and practice, practice practice ....... I 'll be studying your dance moves very closely this Sunday. LOL

    Re: Dance Competition

I am still trying to get a perspective on the structure of R'n'R dance competition organsiations. It seems to be a very loose confederation with opportunities for improvement.

The international governing body is the World Rock'n'Roll Confederation.

The WRRC recognises the Australian R'n'R Dancesport Council as the national body for this country.

Dennis Foley is the Victorian contact. He is best known for his company DanceSurance. This is where the bulk of R'n'R clubs & schools and the VRRRDA get their public liability cover.

It would be great if the ARRDC acted as the parent body and arranged cooperative efforts between the States for comps, rules, standards, promotion, judging, etc but so far I have not seen this.

After the State Championships I plan to try to open a dialogue between the VRRDA and the ARRDC.

I am inspired by the continuing success of the New Zealand Amateur Rock'n'Roll Dance Association. They run strong, high standard, well supported regional and national comps. (Of course New Zealand has the benefit of not having separate States plus having smaller cities and a bunch of major towns that do have a good sense of community.)

But, to see Rock'n'Roll competition dancing looks like make sure you are at Epping next Saturday.

It's your Association, get involved. Good ideas are always welcome.
Make sure your R'n'R club or dance school is getting best value.
