Prairie Oysters Head For The High Country

    Queens Birthday Weekend…Omeo Winter Wonderland
    Saturday 9th, Sunday 10th & Monday 11th June

The Prairie Oysters will be performing in Omeo on Sunday 10th June during the Queen's Birthday long weekend as part of the town's Winter Wonderland which coincides with the opening of the Victorian Ski Season. The Winter Wonderland is a community event designed to bring locals and visitors together for a bit of fun after the harrowing start to the year.

In the summer of 2006/2007, Victoria was ravaged by massive bushfires which swept across north eastern Victoria and Gippsland. More than 1 million hectares (2 and a half million acres) was burnt out across the Great Divide including State Forest Areas in Gippsland and North East Victoria. The fires were so big that the city of Melbourne, more than 350 kilometres away, was blanketed in smoke. This was in the face of the current drought and one of the hottest summers on record. In what was to be a cruel twist, areas of Gippsland were hit by flash flooding and land slides in February 2007 when a short burst of heavy rainfall hit the area.

Last week, whilst playing in the tiny township of Licola, The Prairie Oysters saw the devastating path the fires took. Recent rains in the area have brought back some greenery but amongst the regeneration the hills still bare the scars left behind by the fires. Needless to say droughts, fires and floods have left scars with the communities all over Gippsland particularly in their local economies.

The Winter Wonderland is an event aimed at getting people out and about and to remind tourists that the town is alive and kicking. The Prairie Oysters are delighted to be part of this event and are looking forward to meeting locals and visitors alike. If you're thinking about making a trip away for the long weekend, head up to Omeo. Check out www.omeoregion.com.au to see what the region has to offer.
