2022 VRRDA Victorian Rock n Roll Dance Championship

Imagine being placed in a time machine and get transported back to the 1950's era when rock n roll first bursts open like an all consuming fireball thrusting itself almost uninvited, and rudely intruded and interrupted the very conservative 1950's social fabric, culture and values as well as the music & dance scene at that period in time. There was Elvis the King, Bill Haley & the Comets, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Ritchie Valens, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and many more and there were all there rockin' the scene and creating a music revolution in the world that still reverberates strongly today. Not only it rocked the world by storm sending teenagers and young people screaming in joy and wild ecstasy whilst, at the same time, parents and very conservative, self serving politicians and the clergy were in total shock and trying in vain to fight back the "devil's music"......

The feel and vibe was all there again last weekend at the VRRDA Rock n Roll Dance Championship re-creating the glorious days of live music and dancing of the 1950's era. The VRRDA Victorian rock n roll dance championship is the premier dance competition event in Melbourne celebrating the 1950's style rock n roll music that we love so dearly, and showcasing one of the best rock n roll dance competitions anywhere in Australia. It was extra special this year after the horror of Covid which resulted in the cancellation of many music gigs, festivals as well as dance competitions throughout Australia in the last two years. Welcome back rockers! Rock n Roll music and dancing are back again and alive!

What can I say of the night. The VRRDA did a brilliant job organising and hosting the event. The St Sava Church Hall was packed with about 400 patrons and hosts one of the biggest dance floors in Melbourne. The dancers, dance judges and many patrons brought back memories of the 1950's era with their colourful 1950's style costumes. Rockabilly Babes was there with a big selection of 1950's merchandise for sale, many Victorian dance clubs and schools were represented on the night as well as the Sydney Swing Katz which have dominated our dance competitions for a number of years now. Display of top level dancing by the competitors and music for social and competition dancing was provided by the band, Who Was The Cat. Well done everyone, and congratulations to Travis Johnson and Monica Kroehnert from Sydney Swing Katz winning the premier VRRDA event - the Victorian Adult State Title. Other big winners on the night were Stuart & Janine Smith winning the Senior State Title and Joshua Pettit & Deborah Griffiths winning the Youth State Title.

Finally, here are some of the videos of social, fun event and competition dancing that I filmed during the night. Looking forward to the next VRRDA Rock n Roll Dance Championship in 2023.
