    Cooly Rocks On Festival 2022

Another fantastic 1950's style rock n roll festival staged last week in Coolangatta, Queensland. Like in previous year, the Cooly Rocks On festival is free entry to all events and band performances with the exception of the Elvis tributes and competition which is a ticketed event. The weather was warm and sunny during the day all week and those coming from the colder southern states absolutely loved the outdoor weather and dancing. It was especially exciting for many rockers to attend the festival again this year after the Covid pandemic caused havoc and cancellations to so many music festivals around Australia in the last couple of years.

There were however some noticeable program changes to the festival this year. The much loved Sunday morning street parade along Marine Parade did not proceed. I noticed too that the hot rod run usually taking place on Saturday night also was missing from the program.

Possibly due to difficulties in overseas travel logistics that could be caused by the impact of Covid, there was no headline overseas bands or musicians this year other than a rock band (the Hydrant) from Bali. There were several "rockabilly and blues" bands from Melbourne taking part including Hank's Jalopy Demons, Keiron Mcdonald Combo, Louis King & Ezra Lee, Slim Gritty and Ross & the Wildest. Adelaide was represented by the Satellites and the Flattrackers hailed from NSW. Local Queensland bands included the very popular Twang, Palomino III and Dezzi D & the Stingrayz along with several DJs. There were tribute acts to Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison and Johnny O'Keefe and also a Doo Wop Trio plus a local swing band called Morse Code & the Secret Squirrels. Of special interest on the weekend to many were the Pin Up competition and the Elvis Tribute & competition which was a paid event. All in all, a good mix of bands, music & tributes to keep the excitement and dancing flowing throughout the festival. Finally, there was also dance classes in rock n roll, swing and rockabilly for those who want to learn more about the different style of dancing. For those who wish to dance through the night there were other venues like Twin Towns and Tweeds Bowls Club staging local rock n roll bands for dancing.

The festival highlight for me personally was the fantastic weather, great bands and the opportunity to again catch up with many friends coming from all over Australia. There was a big selection of merchandise and food stalls along the Marine Parade foreshore and the display of hundreds of classic cars and hot rods is a must see activity during the Cooly Rocks On Festival. Can't wait for the next festival in 2023......
