    not long now

A discussion around the table last night was that venues will soon have to stop the smoking. Most of the people in the discussion were pretty happy and I made mention that since the ban on smoking in our dance club the number of people attending has grown, maybe just coincidence, I'm not sure. The figures overseas shows that patronage in most venues grows with the introduction of no smoking inside. I for one will be happy because I dont smoke and know that on several occassions I have decided not to attend a venue because of the smoking. More importantly I am wondering what others think - will we see more numbers because people like myself will not shy away from venues that allow smoking ? I can see that in time this could lead to an increase in numbers, in particular with venues that are a little smaller where it gets a but stuffy, what do people think ?

I also am looking forward to that time. I have stayed away from venues because I know my clothes and hair will smell after being there for even a short while. However, usually I ‘put up with it’ like most of us.

They should have an under-cover area for smokers though. After all, they are not doing anything illegal and the government is happy to make plenty of money from the sale of cigarettes.

It is a good sign that non-smokers are in the majority and many of us are waiting for the change.

    Re:not long now

I doubt whether the numbers are coincidence tggsb, I believe attendances will grow because the majority of hotel punters at rock & roll gigs would have a priority on their comfort level. At the least, punters will stay longer if they donÂ’t have to be subjected to those 1 or 2 hours during a packed gig where the air filtering system cannot cope as IÂ’ve noticed in some of the smaller pubs in the city. As essex wrote, the smoke does pass through your hair & clothes before it gets filtered.

Venue owners will eventually erect & designate outside smoking areas to entice more trade. I have respect for the smokers who currently, show consideration for others and smoke their cigarettes outside, even at smoking venues. I know of 2 visiting couples (Bendigo & Bellina NSW) who recently opted not to attend the smaller smoking venues, and it wasnÂ’t coz of dance floor size either.

For a very long time now, the non-smoking, hard-core rock & roll lover has put up with smoke discomfort so as to be involved in the crowd atmosphere & the entertainment of their favourite bands. I welcome these new smoking laws (1st July I think), that IÂ’m sure will encourage existing and new rock & rollers to experience (in greater comfort), the atmosphere and fun of these smaller pub venues.

But I have a concern though, once implemented, venue owners may water these smoking laws down. In this case, who will enforce & control these laws and administer fines eg police, council, the AHA???? I raise this because of the designated smoking area at the Waltzy being 2 meters from their open dining area.

And tggsb, to answer your question in a recent post, these new incoming-smoking laws at entrainment venues IS a small step forward in the advancement of the human race.

    Re:not long now

As an asthmatic, I too look forward to non smoking venues from July this year. And not smelling like a smoked cod at the end of the night and hopefully living a little longer in life.

If patronage increases after the ban has being enforced then it can only be a good thing all round. But like Jazza said, let's hope we will not be getting "Clayton" non smoking venues where smokes continue to drift across from nearby "designated" smoking areas. I reckon there might also be a few unpleasant "encounters" before everyone totally accepts the new laws.

Ohmygod! Like the ABC TV series, Thumper - you are one bloody grumpy "old" man with a lot to say about the ills in our society.

I can just about see everyone scrambling for cover as you let loose one tirade after another. I reckon you 'll make a very bad politician as you speak your mind too much. You are like a straight banana that also refuses to change its colour over time .........

But public policy implementation is never easy. Look at the debates over prostitution, heroin shooting gallery, euthanasia, abortion etc. No easy solutions there. But In many ways I rather live in a democratic society where the wheel of change moves very slowly than live in an authoritarian one where changes happen because the dictator says so. And one gets shot if one disagrees with the change.

At the end of the day, I am with you. No smoking is good but smokers shouldn't be treated like lepers and hopefully venues will cater for them in the most appropriate way possible.

Bug.. Thank Christ for ppl like thumper, who tell the truth rather than create a smoke screen, the truth always did hurt.. BAD LUCK !!
Secondly I agree with the second part of your post, smokers should Not be treated as less than human as they sometimes do, I know I am one.
As far as venues go, most pubs and some clubs have already begun construction of outdoor areas for us smokers, and if I see one non smoker out there.. POW right in the kisser..heh

I didnt mean to come across as grumpy... But so much is being done to stop smokers from taking part in their habit.. and thats not a bad thing... But making smokers feel like outcasts while little is done to actively stop other drug users smacks of a double standard to me. Yeah.. I'd make a shocking politician.... But then Johnny Howards been one for 40 odd years so anythings possible

Thanks for your comments too Frank...

    I'm a smoker. I agree with BT's and Frank's comments.

I have one thing to add........Rockabilly people smoke AND drink......where smoking is banned, they won't attend, because having a drink with a ciggie goes hand-in-hand. Sure, they'll have to get used to it, but in the short term, attendances to Rockabilly gigs will be down due to the smoking-ban factor and thus won't spend so much over the bar.

And we're only talking about the minority of venues that still support live music. Venues cant just expect to have all these people rush in on July 1 without offering the public more variety than just gaming and bistros. We need more pubs like the FTG and Monash who offer entertainment as well...

If non smokers have been avoiding pubs all this time, theyve obviously been doing other things with their entertainment dollar.. So pubs and clubs will have to do different things to make non smokers change their social habits. Especially in the short to medium term.

ya look like your on the wrong page Frank.. this one was about smoking, the other was about dancing...then again I must remember you bash things with sticks to make noise LOL
Now for something different - Cat I disagree with ya (surprised hey ) and the reason is this - you can sit at home and smoke and drink but you wont see the bands. People go to bars, pubs, clubs and venues to see the bands and listen to the music live. Venues such as little marias, werribee events centre and so on survive without the smoking. Now I appreciate what you say about the Rockabilly crowd but they will adjust as have the crowds which attend the aforementioned venues, and sneak off for a fag but be back to listen to the bands. I agree they may not drink whilst outback smoking but overall the bar wont suffer and if other patrons attend because of the clean air then the bar should actually go up. I think I am right because we all love the live music and a cold drink but not all of us like the smoke.

First, if smokers continue to sit outback smoking, then they didn't come to hear the music anyway. As a never-smoker, I totally agree that attendance should actually go up and the punters who do attend will be real music fans.

In California, which went smokefree in January 1998, 54% of the bar patrons questioned there in a survey replied that they would be more likely to visit smoke-free bars. Only 10% said they would not and around 34% replied no change. California's bars, casinos, and gambling clubs continue to profit since going smokefree. Since its 2004 smoking ban in pubs, Ireland has seen no decline in business at pubs and restaurants and, in fact, business in that sector has improved according to the Central Statistics Office.

I also agree with thumper that to lure the nonsmokers out of their easy chairs or away from other forms of entertainment, more bars will probably have to hire bands, which could only be a good thing for all of you rock and rolling and country bands in Victoria.
