    Camperdown Rock The Clock Festival

Despite inclement weather, the rock n roll music festival in Camperdown last weekend was a great success in my opinion. This festival was re-started by some very dedicated people after the demise of Camperdown Rockabilly Cruise Festival 2 years ago. The town and local businesses were keen to keep this 1950's style festival alive as it was such a drawcard for patrons not only from all over Victoria but also from inter-states. It was an iconic music festival and is one of the few remaining rock n roll music festivals in Australia. It would be a shame to lose it.

With the rain, the organisers made contingency plan to move all events indoor and what a great job they had done. The festival officially started on Thursday night at the Theatre Royal with Devil Women From Mars playing as a warm up to the festival. It moved full swing on Friday night with bands and dancing at the Theatre Royal, Rockers Lounge, Hampden and the Madden hotels. A drive-in movie featuring "American Grafitti" was also on at the showgrounds. On Saturday & Sunday, music & dancing was on from after 10 am all weekend and continued on to late at night. There was also dance lessons, dance competition, 1950's fashion show, burlesque and one could shop for 1950's gear including clothes and shoes. The weather was much better on Sunday and cars and hot rods were out on the main street along with some merchandise stores. Street traffic mainly from local town folks which has always been a highlight inevitably was down this year but still they were given free entry to most events indoor.

Palomino lll from Queensland's Sunshine Coast headed the band list and were ably supported by a host of Melbourne based bands including Fender Benders, Kid James Trio, the Westernairs, Moonee Valley Drifters, Robyn & the Rancheros and some local bands like Tommy & the Lucky Strikes, the Pete Daffy band, Sheena & the Big Cats, Devil Women From Mars, Loose Cannons and Rachael Brady & the Moonshine Special. As a bonus, there was also Zydeco Jump playing New Orlean/Cajun music genre which was the highlight for me personally plus Chonk which is a swing band playing mainly 1930's -1940's Big band style swing music.

All in all, the music on offer was diverse and excellent ranging from rock n roll, rockabilly, blues, honky tonk, swing and zydeco. Lots of dancing on the weekend as a result and meeting of old friends from all over Victoria plus meeting new ones too.

Well done to the organisers of Camperdown Rock The Clock Festival. Despite the adverse weather especially on Saturday, the festival proceeded smoothly and everyone had a great time. Please continue to support all your local Victorian rock n roll festivals to keep the music and dancing alive. Also, continuing to celebrate all the fun activities, cars and fashion we all love from the 1950's era.
