    "Alternate" Rockabilly/RnR/Blues Venues

Our 1950's scene in Melbourne is really diverse and vibrant in so many ways. For many rockers, they enjoy the dancing and live music in one of the many venues in town like the dances held at Alleycatz, Flipside, Furlan Club, Triple Fs, Freccia, Rosebud RSL, Rosebud Italian Club and at clubs in Altona and Sunshine etc.

Others like to dance to music at the various RSL clubs or at the Dandenong Workers Club. Most likely, all these rockers also enjoy attending music festivals like the one held recently at the Rosebud Foreshore, Geelong & Ararat R&R festival, Rock Around the Clock in Camperdown, Ballarat Beat etc

There is also the "Sunday" arvo or evening dance scene and venues in Melbourne which is generally well attended too. DJ Ashley and Leanne have been running their dances at the Highett Bowls club for the last few months and, before that, at Fast Eddies. There's also bands at the Royal hotel in Mornington, Dorset Gardens hotel and Maroondah Sports Club just to name a few. And of course, the Dandy Workers Club have their Sunday evening dance for many years and is still going strong today.

Yet for some others, they mainly frequent the "alternate" live music venues which are usually held in city areas and in St Kilda with venues like the Gem bar, Lomond, Bendigo hotel, the Dogs Bar, Transport Bar just to name a few of these venues. Yes - these venues are quite different to those I mentioned above and they do cater more for those who enjoy listening to the band whether it's 1950's style rockabilly, honky tonk, blues or roots R&R. Dancing is optional and there isn't a big dance floor available anyway in these city venues. Nevertheless, the music on offer and the bands playing in some of these venues are top class performers and arguably amongst the best 1950's style bands in Australia. No wonder these rockers enjoy their music and the "close up" vibes afforded by these venues.

So the live music scene is quite diverse in Melbourne. The beauty is you can choose to go to one particular type of venue and be completely satisfied with what's on offer. Or you can also "cross over" from time to time to experience an alternate live music scene or venue like I do sometimes. The main thing is go out there to enjoy yourself every weekend and, in doing so, supporting our live music scene .......keep rockin' everyone.
