Flipside celebrated it's 100th dance milestone last Friday night at the Hungarian Community Centre in Wantirna South. The venue was jam-packed with rockers & regular patrons who were there to celebrate a very happy event. I could remember those early days of doom & gloom when Lt Maria finally closed its door after hosting her regular fortnightly dance for many years. Rockers were wondering back then where they 'll be doing their dancing and seeing their favourite 1950's style bands after Lt Maria was closed. So it was pleasant news to everyone's ears when word finally got out that Flipside would take up the challenge to put on regular fortnightly rock n roll dance in Melbourne.
As many of you may already know, Flipside is a team comprising Milton, Sue & Big Al assisted by a small team of helpers to set up the venue for each gig and then packed things away after the gig. It's hard work for little rewards so it's dedication Flipside have plenty. Milton is also a very knowledgeable person in the 1950's and 1960's Australian music scene and has a large collection of archive & classic music & bands videos and tapes. Milton also doubles as DJ "Monster" on the night and showing on the big screen all his favourite classic music videos.
To help celebrate the 100th dance was the Fender Benders who amongst the dancers arguably is one of the favourite 1950's style rock n roll bands in Melbourne. The Fender Benders did not disappoint and the dance floor was packed throughout the night.
Congratulations and well done to Flipside for its 100th dance. Looking forward to the 200th dance celebration further down the track. The venue (Hungarian Community Centre) in Wantirna South is on Boronia Road, just off Eastlink so it's very easy to get there. Huge parking facility and, best of all, a huge wooden dance floor that's just perfect for rock n roll dancing. Lets all continue supporting our dances and the bands and keeping our 1950's dance & music scene alive & vibrant.
Re: Flipside's 100th Rock n Roll Dance Celebration
Many thanks, Magic and Vicrock for the support received over the 5 year journey. With the guidance of James Bookman & Linda Smyth the transition into rock and roll danceable music was made a lot easier.
And special thanks to all the rock and roll dancers in Melbourne's east that have supported Flipside.
Re: Flipside's 100th Rock n Roll Dance Celebration
Well said Jitterbug! Flipside has become a great dance venue and Milton, Sue and team have put a huge amount of effort into providing a great dance for everyone to enjoy. It's a fantastic venue and Milton's video clips (plus the music trivia) add a unique element to the rock n roll dance scene. I think most rockers in Melbourne have been along to the dance at some stage, and if they haven't yet made the trip then they are missing out on a great dance.
Looking forward to celebrating the 200th dance too
