VRRDA 2018 Rock n Roll Dance Championship

Another year of fantastic Rock n Roll dance competition for a sold out event at the Hungarian Community Centre in Wantirna South. This is the 25th year of competition hosted by the Victorian Rock & Roll Dance Association (VRRDA) with the first event held at the Collingwood Town Hall back in 1993. Dance competitors came from various dance clubs in Melbourne and regional Victoria, and also including a contingent of dancers from Sydney Swing Katz and from Queensland. This year especially is pleasing with a large number of young competitors which was lacking in previous years. This augurs well for the future of R&R dancing at least here in Victoria. Well done to all the winners, competitors and the VRRDA for hosting another great dance competition.

Congratulations also to Anne Truex, dance teacher for many years from the La Trobe Valley, who was inducted into VRRDA's Hall of Fame for making a significant contribution to R&R dancing over many years.

Sydney Swing Katz especially were very successful on the night in winning the first and second placings in the Adult State Title. The winners were the reigning champions - Andrew Auditore & Caitlin Hooper. In the Junior State Title, the winners were again from Sydney Swing Katz represented by Orlando Mae & Samantha Cannistra. The Senior State Title was won by Grant & Maryanne Richards who I believe are also instrumental in introducing a good number of junior dancers (TR - Team Richards) in this year's dance competition. Hopefully, we shall see more of these junior dancers competing again next year.

Shane Magro Combo has emerged as one of Melbourne's most exciting R&R and Rockabilly bands in recent times. The band played for the main competition events as well as for social dancing on the night.

All in all, a very enjoyable evening of high class R&R dance competition and social dancing. It's a night of Rock n Roll that Melbournians can truly be proud of in terms of contributing and enhancing our 1950's dance and music scene.
