    DOUBLE BASS QUESTION

    Hiya

Over the Christmas break I decided to treat myself and scare the heck out of my beloved by announcing that I am now the proud owner of a double bass.

It's not anything flash but its going to be so cool to learn a relatively new instrument (although I still have alot to leanr on the ones I use now)... Anyway....

Can anyone tell me where I can go in the North - North East suburns to buy gut strings for a double bass? Or is there a cheaper alternative that will work for slapping?

I'm from the Fender school so any help or information would be gratefully appreciated.

Hope y'all had a great xmas and hope you all have a happy new year. See you all round the traps in 2007.

Peace on Earth and may it rain

Have you tried the Bass Shop in Park Street South Melbourne? There is also one in Sydney. It is more than twenty years since I last owned a double bass and back in those times it was pretty good to get help from guys who repaired violins, cellos, etc. There was a guy around Hawthorn who was the best repairer. Think his name was Verwerda. Another option would be to contact Kel Mc Millan who runs the Australian Pops Orchestra or the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Each usually has two or three double bass in their line up. One last suggestion is the webpage Just Strings.
Good luck with it. They are great fun but they don't fit in a Mustang as easy as what was invented by Leo......ian

Good ideas Ian thanks... as an ex ABC employee I should have called the MSO first.

I didnt think of the Bass Shop in Sth Melb. But youve given me some good suggestions.

As for it not fitting in the car?.. Yeah I know. Fortunately the station wagon is appropriate. Already told the wife she wont be able to come to gigs. She loves my double bass.. hehehehehe.

Thumper. Straight 8's is right on the money. I have been slappin the same set of Clef guts now for almost 2 years. They have a great feel and slap sound. Even on a dry bass, no amplification.

The Price has not changed maybe even cheaper.
