    Cooperative Band Promotion Opportunity

There is an opportunity for a bunch of bands to promote themselves via a stall at the Rock'n'Roll Dance Championships on Saturday 10 March 2007. I am sure we could work out a satisfactory fee deal.

The 2007 Championships are an afternoon and evening event and we have hired both the large halls at the Hungarian Centre in Wantirna.

We are already getting a good take-up rate on space in the stalls area.

It occurred to me that a few bands might even cooperate to have a booth. You guys could flog CDs, do autographs and sign Vic Rock Calendars, promote existing gigs and take bookings, talk music and maybe play a little bit.

Whaddya reckin? If its a goer we will need to provide some space before the stalls area is sold out.

    Rob,

it's a pity for the good of the rock community that you are unable to provide limited stall space free of charge to the bands. For the small amount of money you may collect is it worth the exercise in charging the bands for the space?

Although I'd like to agree with you Ian, it is a user pay society is it not?, I think that the idea is a good one, all Rob is trying to do is include the whole rock and roll community at this event, and have it well represented, like you make it a total success and good on him.......Out

    Re:Cooperative Band Promotion Opportunity

I am not knocking the VRRDA and I have brought this subject up with them many times in the past. But, even the success of the more recent dancing shows on television, includes the use of live bands.

If we want Live Music to survive along with Rock and Roll, I reckon the VRRDA could go a long way to refreshing the movement by encouraging people to learn and compete in dancing, to live music.

I applaud RobE for the invitation to bands to participate and to be included in some way, but I really do think it needs to go one step further to raise the profile of the Dance Scene with the inclusion of Live Music.

Rock and Roll is not a sequenced event and should be spontaneous and free, just like the music is.

What do all you other vic rockers think?

    Re:Cooperative Band Promotion Opportunity

I have no particular problem with either proposal. To charge or not to charge - that is the $64 question. But there may be another way? Like "you scratch my back, and I scratch yours ....." Perhaps the bands and VRRD can work out a mutually beneficial "win-win" arrangement between themselves for the benefit of R&R?

Lyndon is right - perhaps dancing to live music does add a new element of spontaneity and may I say, unpredictability. Test the skills of dancers to react and to improvise in those situations, therefore not a bad thing. Of course, live music may be seen by many as more exciting and adds to the overall atmosphere.

There's always the cost factor involved with live bands but like I said above - you scratch my back, I scratch yours .....

    Just my thoughts ..........

Dancing to live music was how it was done in friendly competitons at Rock 'n' Roll Club dances years ago. Why was that practice ever stopped?

Like I said in a previous post look at the big picture, and as much as it pains me, I totally agree with wait for it.. Lyndon
    Let music live.....

And as far as Jitterbugs comment go, I personally think that what was stated, has actually got legs and may be a serious option, this seriously needs to be looked at, its the best idea I've heard in ages.. (scratch)

Please count The BobKats in on this. May we make some suggestions?

    1. Bands should play a couple of tracks from the CD they have for sale.
    2. Dancers should get to dance to the bands live music.
    3. No crap about Rockabilly V Rock n Roll.

Ok also how much is a stall?

Thanks Dave. I will be in touch.

Guys I have started a new thread to explain why we use recorded music for the State Championships.

Please do think about how local bands could cooperate to staff a stall during the arvo and evening of the State Championships on 10 March 2007.

Your man Kempy has been in touch with Dave, the VRRDA Marketing Coordinator, about your space and technical requirements. (Dave is also the current State Champion male dancer.)

There is still time for more bands to get in on this and promote themselves to a crowd that takes its Rock'n'Roll real seriously.

You can sell CDs and DVDs, sign autographs, rap with the fans, take bookings, sell memorabilia, perform or whatever.

There are still some opportunities for trade stalls as well.
