There are so many important dates I just cannot remember but I am not able to forget that on the third of June Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge.
So what was it, in this corny, pseudo-country pop song, that Billie Joe and Bobby Gentry were throwing off the bridge when they were spotted by the preacher? Any suggestions?
”It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty delta day”, as Billie Joe McAllister jumps off the Tallahatchie Bridge, according to Bobbie Gentry’s song, “Ode To Billie Joe”
Kempy, I love you like a brother but I was not looking for a quote from a web site you just Googled up.
What I want to know is what did these simple red neck Gomers chuck off the bridge that then led to:
a) Billy Joe committing suicide, and
b) Bobby singing a song about it?
We know what the Teenangel was doing in front of the train that killed her, Tommy's motivation for being in the fatal stockcar race and the cause of Roy's dreams of drowning (talk about wet dreams).
So what did they pitch off the bridge and then why did BJ top himself?
Hey RobE, you got me interested on this subject, led to much speculation at the time.
The quote I use came from Ron Smiths Oldies Calendar - This Week In Rock'n'Roll, which I use on my program each week.
According to the Novel and Screenplay produced by Max Baer Jr.
Billy was struggling with his sexual identity, Billy was so tormented by this that he kills himself, the object thrown from the bridge was a ragdoll. (Ode to Billie Joe - Wikipedia Encyclopedia)
