In May, dancers from around the world will be travelling to New York to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Frankie Manning’s birth on 26 May 2014. The organisers have also invited all Lindy Hoppers to video a performance of Frankie’s "Lindy Chorus", and post it on YouTube, in a global tribute to Frankie! Many swing classes are practicing the routine to video it, so get along to a class if you'd like to be involved, or watch the youtube clip and learn the routine (see below). It will also be danced and hopefully videoed at the Flipside dance at the Hungarian Club on Fri 23rd May, so come along and join in.
Sounds like fun, Joceb. The individual dance moves are not difficult and we see those displayed all the time in our social dancing. But the dance sequence and been able to correctly follow the beat to Big Band music might be a challenge on its own. Would be fun to see it dance on Friday night at Flipside......wonder if all would continue Lindy hopping till the end or just repeat the Lindy Chorus routine.
Pat at Swing Central is currently teaching the lindy Chorus on Tues nights at Ashwood and will video it in May. I know Andy Zammitt and Top Cats have taught it several times over the years so there are plenty around who know the routine. With a month to practice hopefully enough people will have a go to make it look good. Perhaps we can have a show of hands of how many would be interested in doing the routine for a video? This will be a world wide tribute to Frankie Manning so it would be great to get a clip included from Melbourne rockers so people around the world can get a glimpse of our dance scene here.
Top Cats will be teaching the Lindy Chorus as per the Frankie Manning 100 video clip at their classes on Tuesday nights at Edinburgh St Hall, Dowling St Springvale North for the next 4 weeks so if you want to learn the routine, or brush up on it, get along to their classes. They will be then dancing the lindy chorus on the 23rd of May at the Flipside dance to be filmed for the world wide Frankie Manning 100 celebration.
The challenge is out there for all to have a go at learning the routine and coming along on the 23rd of May to be part of the filming of Melbourne Rock n Roll dancers tribute to the late, great Frankie Manning.
