A very special night last Friday celebrating "Frankie 100" at Flipside Rock 'n' Roll dance at the Hungarian Club in Wantirna. Frankie 100 is a world-wide event celebrating Frankie Manning's 100 birthday and specially in showcasing Frankie's signature "Lindy Chorus" dance. Frankie Manning is also popularly called the "Father of swing dancing" and was one of the original members of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers during the Big Band era based in Harlem. He also featured in several Hollywood movies showcasing swing dancing in the 1940's.
Dancers from several dance schools took part in dancing the Lindy Chorus including Lou & Lynn, Sylvester's Cats, dance school from Gippsland, and some swing dancers from the Mornington Peninsula. Well done everyone! You danced and celebrated Frankie's birthday in great style!
The night also featured Honey B & the Stingers' debut gig at Flipside. I haven't seen this band for a little while and, as always, I enjoyed dancing to their classic rock & roll music tunes. A pity the sax player was not in the band last night as I feel it adds variety to their music. The band is a welcome addition to a very strong line up of 1950's style rock & roll bands that have already played for Flipside to-date.
For those who have yet to attend the dance, Flipside rock & roll is hosted by Milton and Sue. Milton has a large collection of historical & classic & rock & roll music video clips which he plays on a large screen during band breaks. Rockers love dancing to his music video clips. The next dance is with the very popular, the Vincents, on 13th June. Make your bookings with Milton at Flipside, and .....keep dancing!
Great review as usual by Vicrocks resident Paparazzi. I'm looking forward to seeing the edited version for youtube of the Lindy Chorus from the Flipside dance, hopefully on the giant screen at the dance on the 13th. If you took video footage of the routine and haven't yet sent a copy to Milton to be included in the youtube clip, please do so ASAP. You can contact him by email on milton@flipside.net.au and use www.wetransfer.com to send your video clip.
