TS Elliot, the famous poet & playwright who won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1948, was once quoted as saying: “only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go”.
Many of us have seen an Olympic Games’ opening ceremony featuring colourful displays & extravaganzas with no expenses spared to showcase the host nation’s people, culture, music, dance & heritage. It is watched by millions live on TV with subsequent wide coverage in various communication channels including the press. Therefore how about the idea of live swing dancing and music included as part of the official program for the coming 2012 Olympics in London? Reaching for the sky to dream the impossible dream is what Swing Patrol in collaboration with local English swing band, the Jive Aces, are trying to achieve. They have now put together a video as part of a submission to the organizing committee requesting to be included as part the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. It’s going to be a long shot but it’s a commendable effort and ought to be supported by the dance communities at large.
Already, the campaign has been taken up & reported by local English daily, the Evening Standard. More promising than that, Swing Patrol has been invited by BBC London’s broadcast to the crowds outside the Olympic stadium as part of the countdown celebration. It’s a promising start indeed – one little step for mankind, a giant leap for swing dancing, maybe?
