Australia Day - Rock & Roll 2009 Awards

It’s Australia Day – an opportune time to roll out “awards” for those rockers who have caught our attention with their contributions to all things Rock & Roll. As in past years, I have embarked on this exercise armed with a good sense of humour and I hope you too could see & enjoy the funnier side to life. No offence is ever intended.

The “‘Stardusts – I’ve Got Another Gig For You” Events Promoter of the Year

    - The first award goes to ……….DJ Ashley! I bet you couldn’t remember nor keep up with all the gigs he put up over the past 12 months. Just for effort alone, he deserves a gong as Melbourne’s foremost “never gives up” promoter of rock & roll gigs. Congrats Ashley!

The “Beaurepaires” - Country Rocker of the Year

    - There is just one person I know who has driven thousands of kms all over Melbourne & country Victoria chasing bands & dances, and writing rave reviews about those gigs. How’s that for passion & dedication! And he may have single handedly kept Beaurepaires Tyres in business with all his travel……LOL. Congratulations gjo267 – we city slickers salute your love for Rock & Roll!

The “John West – The Fish He Rejects” Personality of the Year

    - Shane from Black Hill Ramblers is a fine musician but you wouldn’t know he’s a pretty knowledgeable “fisherman” too, would you? Just like that salmon rejected by John West, he reckons the fishes offered by Markus on his “Plenty of Fish” website (on-line dating agency) are a bit suspect and may even have gone off! He surely deserves an award for his contribution to discussions about public health safety & and his knowledge about all kinds of “fishes”.

The “Versace” - Best Dressed Rocker of the Year

    - Like a cougar, she’s very cool & moves in style on the dance floor. Dressed to thrill & kill, she pounces on her unsuspecting dance partners wherever she goes. She’s all class whether in her leopard skin outfit or a pretty & nostalgic 1950’s dress. We love you Rose & we love your style!

The “John Travolta - Rockabilly Stroll” Dancer of the Year

    - He’s the coolest dude in town since John Travolta appeared in the Grease movie. This young stud errr …..I mean, Studley (Brett) is undeniably “Mr Rockabilly Stroll” for his smooth swingin’ hips and side way thrusts. He’s outshines all the girls strolling in front of the stage. Pipped by a short nose are the lovely mares – Foxy, Marg, Sue, Rhonda, Jackie & Hotrodgirl.

The “Viagra” - Dance Event of the Year

    - So much pre-event excitement & publicity, and even talk of stocking up defibrillators for those poor old tickers unable to keep pace. Alas, it wasn’t to be - the inaugural burlesque at the Nash could well have won the “anti climax” dance event of the year hands down (and whatever else).

The “Big Love” - Me’nage ‘a Trois” Relationship of the Year

    - Is there something going on between Icon, Bling Bling and Bree? You would think so with their not so infrequent public declarations for hot dates with one another. Not quite another episode from the American TV series “Big Love” but Icon, Bling Bling & Bree has kept me continually & tantalisingly in suspense. Now come up & get your awards!

The “Pretty Woman” - Rocker Couple of the Year

    - Happy is a man and woman in love! May a thousand virgin flowers bloom in the fields for a happy couple in love! Yes – unfortunate for some in 2009, love has come and gone but may love forever remain strong for Alley & Phil. Congratulations & may we yet see our first rocker baby born one day?

The “Joe Cocker - You Can Leave Your Hat On” Personality of the Year

    - He gallops in from the Wild West and charms us all with his cool rockabilly steps. Whether he’s rockin’ at Perth’s Mustang bar or in Melbourne, you couldn’t miss him cos’ when the light dims on the dance floor he’s the man who leaves his hat on. You are a true legend, Ando! Come receive your award. Also special mention for Shane (Black Hill Ramblers) & the Prairie Oysters boys.

The “YouTube Videos” Personality of the Year

    - Tezza seems forever trapped in his 1970’s rock music time warp. For exciting dance video contributions, Roknray is our man. But for videos with an overseas (English) perspective, I “dig” Rockin’ Bones and I really don’t think he/she is real gone yet …………LOL. Congratulations Rockin’ Bones!

The “Microsoft” - Rising Young Rock & Roll Entrepreneur of the Year

    - Some people only dream dreams whilst others work to make their dreams come true. If you dream to look and dress like an authentic 1950’s rock & roller – dream no more because Rockin’ Sweetheart has the answers for you. As a bonus, she could also be the reality for a younger dance competition partner you have been dreaming for.

The “Sheepdog & Rock & Roll Mormon” Dancer of the Year

    - With Whem & Roland not dancing much recently along with Wayne, Greg, Andrew & Bluseybob disqualifying themselves after getting “hitched”, nonetheless the search may well be over after Robe relinquished his crown. With Brown Eyed Girl disqualified because of gender and with a pre-requisite to attract lots of female dance partners including DevineMsM, Inga, Tassie19, Foxy, Hotrodgirl etc, I am happy to crown Jamesdeanbro the new “Sheepdog and Rock & Roll Mormon” dancer of the year! Congratulations Don!

The "Yvonne Allen" - Dateless & Desperate Rocker of the Year

    - Imagine the movie - "Sleepless in Seattle" if Tom Hanks failed to turn up at the Empire State Building's observation deck leaving Meg Ryan all alone, dateless & desperate on New Year's day. Not quite the same drama, but that was exactly what happened to one very nice rocker in 2009. Having a dance "date" arranged 12 months in advance, then turning up ready to dance the night away only to find her "date" hadn't turned up but in fact tucked in nicely in a hospital bed in Albury with lots of nurses attending to his every needs ......... Yes - come on down Joceb to receive your Australia Day award. LOL

Well thought out Jitts, don't know about the tyre bit but the fuel man just loves me.

You forgot to give the major Australia post award to yourself, for all the interesting and humorous stuff you come up with over 1000 and now working towards 2000 posts, I recon this very special due diligent award should be at the top of the list.

WHAT DO ALL THE VIC ROCKERS OUT THERE THINK ABOUT THIS--MAKE A COMMENT! COME ON.

Give Jitts a big round of applause. Clap Clap Clap.

hi paul,as usual,a very informative post from you,and fair to the people you have mentioned in your vic rock awards,im happy to say im not totally locked into the seventies?music scene, tho it was an era when i was ready to party!!!!disco was there, punk, and regaee came, and then new wave of the eighties, but my musical roots go back to the 40s(blues,swing)and the fifties!(elvis and rock n roll)the swinging sixties!(motown, pop, mod hip, beatles)to the 70s you mentioned,i probably dont cover alot or 50s rock n roll, cause its been done(library)but i love music overall, hence,my latest music post, terence trent d"arby,nineties...i dont care who,if its classy, ill listen...cheers mate.

Thumbs up Re: Australia Day - Rock & Roll 2009 Awards

    "Dancer of the Year Award"

    DISQUALIFIED FOR BEING A FEMALE!

Do I sense a hint of Sexual Discrimination here! I think next year we might aim for more females on the voting panel.

Keep up the great posts Jitts you're always very entertaining and yes another round of applause!

Re: Australia Day - Rock & Roll 2009 Awards

Very comprehensive Australia Day awards Jitterbug. Well done!! I agree you forgot the Australia Post award - it can only be awarded to Jitterbug for over 1000 posts!!! Too modest to give yourself an award but I'm sure everyone else will honour you with the title Postie of the Year.

Now when is the award ceremony so we can put faces to lots of these names? And what do the trophies look like? Could be a lot of fun making up appropriate trophies/medals/certificates and the acceptance speeches would be a laugh

Thanks for taking the time to think them all up and give us all something to read.
    Cheers

Goodonya Jitterbug. Another well thought out thread and entertaining read. Did you know that over 1000 VicRock posts makes you the automatic stand-alone winner of the postie award. Keep up the good work.

Re: Australia Day - Rock & Roll 2009 Awards

At the risk of becoming a victim of George Santayana's saying - "the highest form of vanity is the love of fame", who am I, a mere human, to refuse the honour of "fame" being bestowed on one, however undeserved. "Australia Postie of the Year" actually sounds quite nice so I shall be humble in receiving the award ..........LOL

By the way, how negligent of me failing to honour one very deserving recipient - Joceb. My original post now updated to include the "Yvonne Allen -Dateless & Desperate Rocker of the Year" award.

Dateless and desperate award - sounds a bit sad: I did think having a heart attack was a pretty good reason to be stood up for a dance, just hope you don't make a habit of it. Whats the award for that one?? A years supply of dance dates maybe?? Can't wait for the awards ceremony if thats the case! Cheers!

Thanks for the award Jitterbug, Much appreciated!

I must correct you on one teeny tiny detail, I must disagree with your use of the term 'Microsoft' as this little Rocker will only use a Mac! haha

Well Jittabug I`m sooooo disapointed, thought I might have at least taken off a` Get Away ` award for the year. Ah well I just better start booking my holiday adventures so I have a chance for 2010. May catch up on my travels somewhere.

I really enjoyed reading all the awards. I reckon you`re in the wrong business-and should make a career of it -Lol. XXX
