    Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival 2017

From all reports, another great weekend of fun and entertainment at Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival. Whilst I arrived only on Saturday early afternoon, the action actually started on Thursday night with the Lincolns and the Hillbilly Hellcats (USA) sharing the performance stage at the "Lounge" in George hotel. More action followed on Friday night with the American rockabilly band and Little Billy band from Brisbane playing in the Lounge plus another Brisvegas band, the Jivecats, supporting the Ol'55. There was also a burlesque show on Friday.

The main program & activities however was from Saturday morning and ran through to Sunday night. In addition to the bands mentioned above, all the other bands taking part in the festival were showcased and they included No Brakes from Sydney, Louis King & the Liars Klub (Melbourne), Cherry Divine (Townsville), Rosie & the Mighty Kings (Melbourne), the Strays (Melbourne) and Craig Shaw (UK). There were hotrods and classic cars show & shine, Best Dressed 1950's style & Pinups competitions, dance classes and demonstrations and of course lots of dancing on the Lydiard Street's "open to the general public" stage and indoor at the Lounge & the Lane stages in George hotel. There was also dancing in the Mining Exchange stage where the Best Dressed and Pinups competitions were held. There was a free Elvis show at the Lydiard Street stage on Saturday afternoon but somehow I missed that which was inevitable as there was just so much activities on offer all day and night.

No rockabilly festival would be complete without the full range of 1950's style stalls & merchandise on sale ranging from shoes, dresses, shirts, records, hats, floral hair pieces as well as 1950's hairdo & make up for ladies.

My observation this year is that the Ballarat Beat Festival was again very lively all weekend even with some showers on Sunday morning. This was made possible with free entry to all the outdoor events especially on Lydiard Street outside the George hotel. It was pleasing to see the general public flocking to the event and enjoying the festival. I think they were especially fascinated watching all the rock & roll dancing happening at the open stage in Lydiard Street. My only wish list for future events is for a much bigger venue for the main evening & night entertainment as it got very crowded at the Lounge venue/stage making it very difficult to find space for dancing.

Finally, well done to the City of Ballarat, the promoters, event organisers & business sponsors. It was truly a very enjoyable week of 1950's style entertainment, fashions, cars, music and dancing. Looking forward to the next Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival in February 2018!
