    Camperdown Cruise Festival 2016

Another fun weekend with Camperdown Cruise Festival 2016 held last week. Camperdown Cruise Festival is an iconic music, dance, fashion & hot rods festival and is one of the "must go" on the Australian 1950's style music festival calendar. I attended on Saturday and Sunday and yes, flying in from Brisbane (sunny one day, perfect the next) the weather in Camperdown was less than perfect this year with some showers and a cold night on Saturday but Sunday was much better although the open air stage at the Clock Tower was a bit breezy. The 3 indoor stages (Rockabilly Room, Rock & Roll Room & Tiki Marquee) however were packed with the main events held on Saturday night with non stop music, bands and dancing. In addition, the Maddens Hotel was hosting a selection of live bands. I just love the small, close up vibe that the Maddens hotel has to offer along with a smallish but great dance floor.

My personal observation is that this year's event was tilted more towards "rock & roll" and the music and bands were very dance friendly with rockin' blues and swing on offer as well. I 'm quite sure it made all the dancers including myself very happy this year.

I love the bands selection too. The Detonators played at this year's Camperdown Cruise for the first time and true to form, they were indeed one of the crowd favourites. A Band Called Twang which hails from Queensland are no stranger to a lot of Melbourne rockers having played gigs here several times in the last year. This band had a great reception at Camperdown and the Rockabilly Room was packed to the rafters on Saturday night when they played. The Lincolns were another favourite for many dancers packing out the Tiki Marquee. Lots of other great bands, both local & overseas including Robyn & the Rancheros, Itchy Fingers, Lucky Seven from Adelaide, Hank Jalopy Demons, Keiron McDonald Combo, Moonee Valley Drifters, the Three Loaders, Phoenix, Lock N Load plus overseas acts in Coral Lee (Germany), Jai Malano (Texas USA), Eddie Gazel (France) and Dollar Bill (UK).

There were other attractions to keep everyone happy and busy with activities the whole day. Hot rods & kustoms cars on display, lots of 1950's theme merchandise stores, 1950's Glamour Hair & Make up by Eva Baker, dance classes & competition, 1950's style fashions parade, Miss Pin Up competition, 1950's style barber and a whole lot more.

Well, Arthur (promoter) & his small band of helpers have done it again! The logistics involved in running this event must have been very challenging for even the most professional and season event operator but well done to Camperdown Cruise for another fun-filled weekend. Looking forward to the next one in 2017.....
