Live Rock & Roll Music & Dance Scene in Brisbane

I have been fortunate to dance to a number of local bands since arriving in Brisbane in early April this year. It hasn't taken me very long to discover that similar to Melbourne, the live music and dance scene is quite diverse and vibrant in Brisbane with quite a few venues including League & Sports Clubs, Bowls Club, RSLs and some hotels variously hosting weekend gigs featuring rock & roll, rockabilly, blues and swing. And that's not including those gigs and dances hosted by local Brisbane and Gold Coast dance clubs. Indeed, Brisbane is one of the rockin' cities of Australia.

There are of course quite a number of Brisbane rock & roll/rockabilly bands that many Melbourne dancers are already familiar with especially those who have made yearly pilgrimage to past Wintersun events and more recently, Coolangatta Rocks On. Many would have danced to Twang, Little Billy, the Sugar Shakers, West Texas Crude, Little Stevie & the Tailfins, Rockin' Bodgies just to name a few.

However, one local Brisbane band that many in Melbourne may not have heard of is the band called Facin' the Crowd. This band has regular gigs every weekend in Brisbane, the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast. The band's song list is not strictly rock & roll as it covers a broad music genre including rockin' blues and country rock. But its music is very popular with local dancers and you could dance to all their tunes from beginning to end.

All the band members are very experienced musicians. Mike Anderson, the drummer and vocal, has worked with or toured & backed overseas artists such as Roy Orbison, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry in addition to local musicians such as Wendy Stepleton, Glen Shorrock and Doug Parkinson. Similarly, the other band members have many years experience playing in various other bands such as the Smokin' Crawdads and the Country Boys. Paul Adamson on bass was previously from Melbourne and has played with Joe Galea, the Weathermen and Bobby James Syndicate.

When visiting Brisbane in future, look up Facin' the Crowd playing at a venue near you. I am pretty sure you 'll have a great time dancing to this band......
