    Alleycatz's 10th Birthday Celebration

What a wonderful night of 1950's style music and dancing to celebrate Jonathan and Zoe's Alleycatz 10th year as a rock 'n' roll dance school and in dance event promotion. As most of you would know, Jonathan and Zoe have been Victorian Rock 'n' Roll dance champions for a few years. Together they now run the biggest rock 'n' roll dance school in Melbourne, if not in Australia. That is in addition to their 1950's style merchandise (clothes and dance shoes) retailing which is a prominent feature in almost all major music festivals. And not forgetting, Alleycatz have been running the $1,000 "Shoot Out" Open Dance Competition in the last few years as well as in organising major event promotion such as bringing out the very popular Si Cranstoun & his band from the UK.

The dance was held at the Polish Club in Albion which is a very large and modern venue. Even for those who has to travel from the other side of Yarra river, it is easily accessed by taking the Westgate Freeway then merging onto Western Ring Road before coming off via Ballarat Highway. The premises featured a large wooden dance floor (fantastic for dancing) and bar facilities. It has a large car park so safety and parking are not an issue. I am quite embarrassed to say it was my first time visiting the venue in Albion although I have been to a number of Alleycatz's dances in Lilydale. I am quite impressed with the venue and feel it's a great place to hold rock 'n' roll dances.

The dance was just about booked out. There was a great vibe in the air and the joint was buzzing all night. Quite obviously, the dance floor was packed throughout the night. Just as well some dancers sat out for a while to give others a chance to dance. And who wouldn't want to dance all night long with two great bands rotating to play those rockin' tunes for the rockers. Local rockabilly band, the Atomic Hi Tones, started off proceeding followed by A Band Called Twang which is one of Queensland most popular 1950's style bands. Although contrasting in style and tunes, I believe the two bands nonetheless complemented each other to play rockin' tunes perfectly suited for rock 'n' roll dancing. It was a very enjoyable night of entertainment and dancing. The celebration continues tonight with another dance at the Lilydale venue.

Congratulations to Jonathan and Zoe for Alleycatz's 10th birthday celebration. They are a household name and an inspiration to many dancers in Melbourne. Alleycatz is a major player in our rock 'n' roll scene, and arguably, keeping Melbourne the rockin' capital of Australia with dance instructions, competitions, live 1950's style music and dance gigs.

Couple of videos below from last night event at the Polish Club .....
