    History of dancing

The following is from a Swing Central newsletter about the introduction/revival of Lindy Hop in Australia 20 years ago. Does anyone have any info / article / links to the history of rock n roll dancing in Australia? I seem to remember something on Vicrock several years ago about it but there is no search function on the forum posts to look for it. I think it would be worth recording / preserving / sharing.

"August is the 20th Anniversary of Swing in Australia

Although there were a few people in Australia already exploring Lindy Hop Swing, 13 August is the official 20th anniversary of the revival of Lindy Hop in Australia, and thanks to Adrian Spadaro’s foresight in organising the first workshop with Rob Bloom in Melbourne, 13 August marks the 20th anniversary of LH swing in Victoria. LH swing groups around Australia and New Zealand plan to celebrate this event by filming their dancers doing “The Jitterbug Stroll” and putting it up on YouTube .

The Jitterbug stroll is a swing “stroll” (aka line dance, aka jazz routine) and was choreographed in 1992 by Ryan Francois. It is usually danced to Woody Herman's "Woodchopper's Ball" and more recently Steven Mitchell's composition "The Jitterbug Stroll" which was specifically written for the dance and calls the choreography in its vocals.

There is probably a doctorate or at least a masters in this.

Hey Rob- maybe you can do the honour as President of VRRDA to do a research on the history of Rock & roll dancing in Australia. You would 've done plenty of that at University. I think Perth Rocks have done something similar for the rock n roll scene in WA. I 'll try to find out.

    Re: History of dancing

Maybe others can contribute what they remember and then a short history can be compiled? I vaguely remember various posts over the years about historical aspects of Melbourne's rnr dance scene. There seems to be plenty online about the music, bands etc, but it would be interesting to have some recorded history of the dance scene and venues. Some that no longer exist like the Waltzing Matilda, Little Marias, Mordi rock, festivals etc should be recorded before they disappear from peoples memories. For new people on the dance scene its interesting to hear about what happened over the years. A permanent page on Vicrock that could be added to as things change would be great. Or maybe on VRRDA site?

Here's a few questions to start the ball rolling.

When was Vicrock created and by whom?
When was Rock n roll news first published?
When did venue's first start holding dances? e.g Little Marias, Waltzing Matilda, Mordi Rock, Dandy RSL, Dandy Workers....
When did individual dance school start teaching / stop teaching?
    When was VRRDA formed?
When did the first VRRDA championships start?

Is that the beginnings of an essay plan for your masters Rob?
