Sapphire Coast Rock 'n' Rodders Festival 2015

It was another very enjoyable weekend in Merimbula for the Sapphire Coast Rock ‘n’ Rodders Dance Festival. This was the sixth year running that Lyndon & Kerry and their small band of helpers have staged the event at Club Sapphire in Merimbula. It is a unique festival in many ways quite unlike the other big R&R festivals. It has a very relaxed atmosphere although once the music starts, the dancing gets pretty hot & furious on the dance floor. It is staged in a popular seaside resort town and the weather is perfect for dancing. You can combine that with fishing, swimming and doing all the other things that tourists normally do. The majority of dancers came from NSW South Coast along with big contingent of dancers also from Gippsland, Albury and Canberra.

The festival started off with a “greet & meet” dance night on Friday featuring local “Buddy Holly” tribute band, the Hoops, which was Lyndon’s other band. It was a big night out and the dance floor was busy all night long with at least 350 rockers attending. There was also 1950’s dance clothing, shoes & merchandise on sale from Jon & Zoe in the venue.

The next day was full of events for participants starting off with a display of hotrods and Kustoms classics in the morning. This was followed later in the afternoon with dance workshops for both beginners and advance dancers. The main event was at night with dances in 2 rooms at Club Sapphire. Fender Benders played in the smaller room, and Shadoogie and the Flaming Stars from Sydney sharing the stage in the main room. I haven’t seen the Flaming Stars for a few years and so it was a nice dancing again to their tunes which was a mixture of rock & roll, rockabilly and swing. Shadoogie played mainly 1950’s rock & roll and some covers of the Shadows which many dancers enjoy listening and dancing to. The Fender Benders appears to be the crowd favourite with their more “edgy” rock & roll tunes and the band also played some rockabilly tunes. It was a huge night and I estimate there would be close to 400-500 rockers dancing on Saturday night.

The final night on Sunday was a dinner dance night with Shadoogie and Fender Benders sharing the main stage and finished off with a jam session by the two bands. It was a wonderful night of rock & roll and all who had attended really had a great time. In summary, it was a very enjoyable long weekend of rock & roll. Well done to all the bands, Sapphire Club in Merimbula and of course all the hard work done by Lyndon & Kerry and their small band of helpers.

Re: Sapphire Coast Rock 'n' Rodders Festival 2015

Friday nights meet and greet dance was a lot of fun, renewing acquaintances from previous years. 16 of Dave Harrington's Harro's Hoppers were all dressed in black and white and had a ball on Saturday night. Sunday morning at 8:30 AM, our ladies performed a choreographed synchronized swimming demonstration in the Sapphire Caravan Park swimming pool decked out in their floral bathing hats of many colours. It woke up most of the park and many came to see what all of the noise was about. Shoalhaven Rockers were so impressed they will join us next year so could have as many as 60 Rockers in the pool for partner dancing and synchronized swimming routines. Sunday nights dinner dance was well organized and all were beautifully dressed in Rock n Roll gear. The event finished with Shadoogie and The Fender Benders bands jamming together with drummers from each band taking turns to belt out their interpretation of some of the shadows classics. All in all it was another great weekend of Rock n Roll and fun with clubs coming from local Merimbula, Sydney, Canberra, Gippsland, Shepparton and Melbourne.
