How would a lover of 1950's style rock & roll music and dancing celebrate Australia Day? Attend a live music performance and dance rock & roll, of course. On Australia Day, many rockers chose to pack a picnic basket and headed to Gumbaya Park which I have done in the past. This year, with Linda Gail Lewis (sister of the "killer" Jerry Lee Lewis) touring Australia for the first time with her daughter, Annie Marie, I thought I would do something different. I went to the Hungarian Community Centre in Wantirna instead to watch her performed as part Australia Day's music extravaganza which also featured a number of other rockabilly bands such as Hank Jalopy Demons, Infernos, Warren Earle, Scotty Baker and Itchy Fingers. The Firebird Trio supported Linda Gail Lewis on her Australian tour.
Linda Gail Lewis has been performing & recording music since the early 1960's. She has released a number of albums including recording singles with the "killer" himself and even with Van Morrisson. Like Jerry Lee Lewis, her trademark musical instrument is the piano and she played it just like Jerry Lee Lewis himself. If you love the music of Jerry Lee Lewis, you would have loved watching her performance last night as she entertained us with a number of Jerry Lee Lewis' classic boogie woogie tunes. It was quite an unforgettable performance as many simply stopped dancing to gather around the stage to watch her and Annie Marie performed.
All in all, it was 8 hours of non-stop music and dancing and as a result many would have turned up for work feeling very tired but satisfied the next day. Australia Day well spent, I say.....
