Seems like Daveys Bar on the Frankston Foreshore is just about the last remaining "dinosaur" in our live music & dance scene. Well, apart from a few RSL venues which cater mainly for a different segment of clients, Daveys Bar still doesn't charge an entry fee when just about every other live music venue in Melbourne has gone in the other direction. Even Flanagans Bar in Pier Hotel, managed by the same business owners, was charging an entry fee but still that didn't stop it from closing its door late last year.
I was very glad when Daveys Bar re-opens its door recently for live music on Sunday afternoons after having undergone some renovations. For several years it was a very popular venue with the dance crowd when it was hosting "rockabilly" and other top blues/swing acts. When it re-opens in late 2014, the new promoter appears to change tack with new blues bands but I felt it was never really drawing in the dance crowd. The Dirty Boogie Band played there the week before and patronage was quite acceptable.
What a dramatic transformation last Sunday when the Detonators made another appearance after a very long while. Just goes to show free entry alone is not necessary the magic bullet in determining a popular venue but that band selection is equally important. It was rockin' all afternoon with the Detonators. The deck outside was full of patrons drinking & socialising whilst the dance floor was packed with rock & roll and swing dancers. Bar staff was kept busy all afternoon. The Detonators didn't disappoint their fans and as usual kept us rockin' all afternoon with their signature brand of self-penned originals mixing in with long time favourite dance tunes with newer ones to be released in a new album shortly.
All had a great time at Davey bar last Sunday afternoon, and the Detonators rocked the joint!
Nicely penned Jitts my two bobs worth, it's not just the music, it's the content and how it's presented, the Dets are a well trained entertainment crew, they know the ropes and how to please a crowd, I love these guys they do it how I like it. They do it for the punters.
Interesting, I went to a well known band last night, 6 piece I might add, I've never been into this band seen them a few times, they've never excited me, last night on first glance their music sounded great, till I worked out it was all mime from a backup machine, Elvis was just too good, my sheila loves Elvis as you know, she can tell what is real Elvis and what is a copy, yep we heard some real Elvis last night, why would a bunch of guys cart in a heap of gear, drums, guitars, keyboard etc to do a 4 hr mime show, disgusting I say.
Give me the Dets any day, I'll still pay.
You are correct there gjo267.....also like the fact the band always agree to an encore performance when the patrons asked for one. Not many bands do that. Dont know what to say about the other band you saw other than agreeing it would be disappointing to know it happened
