At long last, GreazeFest staged its inaugural 1950's style Kustom culture, hotrods, live music and dance event in Melbourne. GreazeFest, a well known household name in the Australian rockabilly calendar for many years, has only ever been staged in Brisbane till now. And a very successful debut in Melbourne from what I can see after attending the event at Sandown Racecourse on Saturday. It has a huge program running all day from 10am till late at night and the venue was just incredible with a fantastic vibe that got everyone pretty excited.
There must have been at least a thousand people attending ranging from young families, Gen X and Y indulging in 1950's style counter culture, billies and rockers. There were hot rods and Kustoms classics on display, specialty bikes and Harleys too, merchandise galore, Pin up classes, 1950's fashion parades, live music with several rockabilly bands headed by Wayne Hancock from the USA and of course lots of dancing. I am especially pleased that Lori Lee (the promoter) has made the very popular arrangement to put down a wooden dance floor which was well used all day and night by rock & roll dancers. Other bands playing at GreazeFest were Atomic Hi Tones, Hank Jalopy Demons, Double Back, Miss Teresa from Brisbane, A Man Called Stu, Pat Capocci, Scotty Baker, Detonators, Rechords, the Saucermen, Dan & the Dualtones, RockaDees etc
In the last few years, Melbourne is fast becoming quite congested with its rockabilly calendar as various venues such as Luwow and Lucky 13 Garage staging "rockabilly" theme nights along with major rockabilly festivals like Melbourne Meltdown, Ballarat Beat, Camperdown Rockabilly Festival and now, GreazeFest. The 1950's scene is indeed alive and kicking in Melbourne, and long may it continues!
