All good things must come to an end .....sometimes. The Gully's Church of Rock (Ferntree Gully Hotel) finally closes its door after 8 long years of rockin' and rollin' live music and dancing. Praise the Lord indeed for high octane rockabilly and addictive rockin' blues, roots and country.
The faithfuls came to church in droves to dance and drink before their rock gods (Itchy Fingers and the Atomic High Tones) as they delivered their rockin' and rollin' sermons for the very last time. A bigger crowd at the Gully I haven't seen for a very long while. The joint was rockin' the whole arvo but sadly mixed with the realisation that this afternoon is the end of an era. Not so much celebrating the demise of a well loved live music venue but the Gully has almost become an iconic institution for many of its followers. Over the years, many friendships formed, romances blossomed and sadly, some relationships fractured but the music and dancing remained every Sunday arvo without fail. For me personally, the Gully was like a second home. I will miss the place greatly!
To the Frentree Gully Hotel management, bar & security staff, the promoters (Jollys, Jazza & others involved initially) and all the bands that played there - thank you for the good times, and the wonderful memories on many great afternoons of 1950's style rock 'n' roll and rockabilly. Our lives have been enriched over the years at the Gully, and I am sure we shall never forget ......
