A new rockabilly music venue opens this Sunday afternoon at Flanagan's bar, Pier Hotel in Frankston. Featuring the Detonators, Atomic Hi Tones and Itchy Fingers, it is very welcome news to all who love live music and dancing particularly at a time when Melbourne have seen the closure of several live music venues in recent months. And the news not getting any better as it seems more closures are expected in the coming months. Economic times are getting tougher in Australia with downturns in most industries, and the entertainment industry is certainly not immune to it. Melbourne has been very lucky in recent years with choices galore in terms of bands and venues. Pretty obvious then, we must support our live music scene or risk losing most of the venues one day.
Flanagans Bar was packed today as expected for an opening gig. The promoters have done their job well with extensive advertising of the gig including on social media like Facebook. Unsurprising, it was standing room only for patrons and dancing space was at a premium. Compared to Daveys Bar next door, Flanagans looks "retro" and doesn't feel as spacious with its quite unusual set up. It does offer a closed up, intimate pub environment but I don't think it is as conducive to dancing requirements. But who's complaining when it offers free live music entertainment when other hotels are closing their doors.
All in all. a very enjoyable afternoon of live music entertainment and dancing. Top marks to all the bands that played today and of course, to Pier Hotel, in supporting the rockabilly live music scene.
