SONYTA & THE INCINERATORS Cd LAUNCH @ CHRISTINE’S Rockabilly last month

For many this was a night to remember with so much happening in 5 short hours! CHRISTINE’S Rockabilly @ Lucky 13 Garage in Moorabbin on Saturday 27th Aug was a combination of ceremonial events. “Sonyta & The Incinerators” had their Cd Launch, “Marty Grogan & The Impalas” made their debut, Sonyta & Mike Traher & Pam Caruso celebrated their birthdays with a humongous Double Bass Birthday Cake, and the theme for the night was an hawaiian ‘TIKI PARTY’ with prizes for pre & post 1960 Cars, best dressed & the door prize. There were also some fun dances with a huge ‘Conga’ line dance and the traditional ‘Limbo Dance’.

First up was Marty Grogan & the Impalas with some hard hitting Rockabilly, this exciting trio pulled out all the stops for this show and left the crooners behind getting the night heated for what was to come. Funny how some things just come together on the night to make a good night GREAT. Our good friend DJ Ashley happened to be passing, (dropping off flyers for his 12 band ROCKTOBER FESTIVAL on Oct 8th at the Royal Derby). He got sucked in to the vibe and kindly decided to dash home and get his Dj desk and join in the fun! He filled in all the gaps with his happy banter and he dug out the ol’ Rockabilly tracks just for us...

Next there was a number plate draw with an awesome prize of a $150 service voucher donated by Mike’s Dyno Tuning of Dandenong which was given to a happy hot rodder just for bringing his ride out for the night.

Back to the bands, Sonyta & The Incinerators drew some huge attention kicking off with an original song with the same name as their Cd title “Bayin’ & Howlin” written by drummer David Rogers. We actually had to request people clear the floor for the dancers as there were so many wanting prime position to see the band, something you don’t see often at the clubs!

After their first set we had another prize giving for the pre and post 1960 cars parked outside, two handsome trophies also from Mike’s Dyno Tuning of Dandenong. The bands next set was a mix of songs from the Cd, Janis Martin, Johnny Cash, Wanda Jackson, Creepshow and even Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.

Then on to the birthday celebrations...Dj Ashley got us all singing Happy Birthday for Sonyta, her dad Mike Trahar and her Auntie Pam Caruso after which they cut the huge flaming double bass shaped cake for everyone to tuck in to. The cake was kindly made by “Sweet By Nature” a cake specialist who can make anything, including all things Rockabilly! ( I hope you check out the photos in my album on this site)

While Ashley spun some discs we transformed the room into a Tiki Party!! For some fun and entertainment, out came the Limbo stick, (the blow up version), and on went the Limbo song! While mostly the youngsters mastered this dance next up was “The Conga” otherwise known as “The Locomotion”. Mainly the ladies but also a few men joined in with this chain of jiggling, wiggling, tiki looking people trailing around the room trying to avoid getting tangled up in tables and chairs. Everyone had a good laugh as it was a sight to behold. Amazing what a crazy song can do to people who are determined to have a good night out! Haha ohhh, exhausting!

Another great set from Sonyta & The Incinerators had everyone up dancing, so they weren’t worn out at all. More prizes followed with the prize for the best dressed ‘Tiki Person’ which went to Caitlin Caruso, she won a lovely trophy to take home and the door prize won by Derek Rowan who won two Cd’s just for coming – his lucky night!
