    Derby Rocktober Festival

Back in the 80's if you lived in Melbourne and were into rockabilly there was one pub you would never miss. For many years back then one of the oldest bars in Fitzroy, the Royal Derby Hotel, was well known for the rockabilly entertainment it provided. But times and places change and the pubs notoriety for that style of music had faded and become a distant memory for most people.

However, for some, those memories still lingered and a few months ago patrons suggested to the management that it might be time to bring rockabilly back. After making some enquiries the manager contacted Dj Ashley and arranged a meeting, a meeting which has started a new rockabilly and rock and roll era for the old pub.

Located on the corner of Brunswick St & Alexander Parade Fitzroy, the hotel with its big rooms, large beer garden, cumfy couches, pool tables and two dance floors is ideally situated to provided entertainment for people from all areas of Melbourne. A bonus is delicious meals that are substantial and inexpensive; if you get the chance you should try the excellent $5 pizza's for which the pub is famous. The hotel also boasts of 14 rooms to accommodate guests should any decide that they would really like to let their hair down and prefer not to drive home until the next day.

To celebrate this new musical era, Ashley and the management have organised a huge 12 band rockabilly, rock and roll, country rock festival for Saturday the 8th of October. Bands start at 1pm and go through to 1am on Sunday morning. Is this a first? There has been many multi band events around Melbourne from time to time but I don't recall any having a 12 band line up.

Bands that will be performing on the day are – Stringbusters, Fender Benders, Moonee Valley Drifters, Billy and the Headliners, Coop Devine, Phoenix, Lowriders, Ignition, Atomic Hi-Tones, Detonators, Blackhill Ramblers, Flyin’ Saucers.

With that line up there's something for everyone and is certainly an event not to be missed!

The Royal Derby Hotel is at 446 Brunswick Street Fitzroy. Phone: 9417 2321 or call Ashley: 0419 317 595
Entry on 8th October is $20

Below are a few photo's taken at the last couple of free Sunday dances held at the Derby.

It is a good venue. Have been a few times now, and starting to recognise the regulars. And the $6 wedges with dipping sauce is excellent value for a light snack. Hope to make it to the 12 band day in October. A good addition to the already vibrant Melbourne rockabilly scene.
