Many of us still remember fondly the movie, “Saturday Night Fever” starring John Travolta. During the late 1960’s to 1970’s dancing was all about “Go Go” and “Twisting” and social “partner” dancing seems to be on the decline until that movie started bringing back a revival. Well, that’s according to some social & dance commentators.
In some ways, I ‘m a bit like John Travolta in the movie – working all week, and looking forward to that big night out dancing, having a drink or two and spending time with friends on a Saturday night. But obviously, at my age, minus all those long hours of “preening” that John Travolta did in the movie . Where’s my favourite night spot to hang out on a Saturday night? Dooley’s Bar at the Monash hotel.
In the last month, I saw some great bands but two stood out in my view. And both were pulling in the crowd resulting in a great rockin’ atmosphere and some furious rock & roll dancing. I haven’t seen Hank Jalopy Demons for quite awhile and maybe that was because the band hasn’t been on the gig circuit lately. This time with “Snappy” on the double bass, the band was a delight to watch and the music simply dance infectious. No doubt, one of the top rockabilly bands in Australia.
And last night, Itchy Fingers were on show. Some rockers have described them as the rock & roll band with attitude. I couldn’t agree more. Rockers simply love their style of music and if you are into rock & roll dancing, you just couldn’t stop dancing when the band starts pumpin’ out those rockin’ tunes. A huge crowd again last night at Monash, and it’s great to see not only the dance floor but also the bar being kept busy all night long. It just shows rockers do support live music scene paying for meals & drinks at least in some of the “free entry” venues.
Finally, sample of videos of the bands in action at Monash ………
I couldn't agree more with you Jitts!!
For live Bands, great atmosphere and as much Rock n Roll dancing the ol' ticker can handle then Dooleys Bar at the Nash is definitely the place to be on any Sat night...
As for Itchy Fingers & Hank's Jalopy Demons, I must say that if you think Melbourne Rocker are spoiled with so many great bands and live venues every week, how lucky am I to have the pleasure to play with two of the best!!
Another date at the Monash that is worth putting into your diary is the "Three For Free" ROCKABILLY RIOT on Sat Oct 15th..... Three bands - Ignition, Benny & Fly By Niters & Hank's Jalopy Demons, all for a ridiculous Free Entry.
